Yoshioka Brewery (Nakai, Obama City) and Hemmi Brewery (Kumagawa, Wakasa Town), both founded during the Edo period, merged in 1965 to form Wakasa Fuji, the only sake brewery in the Obama area, continuing its history. Later, descendants of the former Yoshioka Brewery took the lead in continuing the business, and in 2016, they established Obama Sake Brewery. Among the "Wakasa" brand, which retains the names of the former breweries, "Junmai Ginjo Wakasa" is one of the local sakes that has attracted attention from around the world. The sake is made with locally grown Gohyakumangoku rice, pure groundwater from the Minamikawa River that flows in front of the brewery, and yeast (FK801-C) developed in the prefecture, making it an all-Fukui Prefecture product. The rice polishing ratio is 55%, and it has a fruity aroma and a slightly sweet, soft taste. This sake won the top Platinum Award in the "Junmai Ginjo" category at the "Luxembourg Sake Challenge 2022," an annual sake tasting competition held by the Japan Sake Sommelier Association. It was also selected as a recommended sake in the "SAKE Category (Junmai Ginjo)" at the "International Wine Challenge 2021," the world's largest and most prestigious wine competition.
