Yoshiokagura (Nakai, Obama City) and Itsumigura (Kumagawa, Wakasa Town), both established in the Edo period, merged in 1965 to form Wakasa Fuji, the only sake brewery in the Obama area. Later, the descendants of the pre-merger Yoshiokagura took over the business and established Obama Sake Brewery in 2016. Among the "Wakasa" brands that bear the name of the former brewery, "Junmai Ginjo Wakasa" is one of the local sakes that has attracted attention from around the world. The sake rice is grown locally in Fukui Prefecture, with a yield of 5 million koku, and the brewing water is the pure underground water of the Minamigawa River that flows in front of the brewery. The sake is brewed using yeast (FK801-C) developed in the prefecture. The rice is polished to 55%, and the sake has a striking fruity aroma and a slightly sweet, soft taste. It won the top Platinum Award in the Junmai Ginjo category at the Luxembourg Sake Challenge 2022, an annual sake tasting event held by the Sake Sommelier Association, and was selected as a competition recommended sake in the Junmai Ginjo category of the International Wine Challenge 2021, the world's largest and most prestigious wine tasting event.
