Originally a merchant family in Hida Takayama that ran a hair oil and candle shop since the Edo period, the fifth generation founded a sake brewery during the Meiji era. Since then, they have continued to brew sake in small batches with the motto "Sake is something that is brewed and nurtured." Currently, they offer a range of flavorful sakes with roots in Ise and Hida. The brand name "Suiō" (酔翁) is inspired by the image of a drunken hermit.
