Founded in 1804 (the first year of the Bunka era), the brewery was originally named "Gozenzake" (the origin of the current brand name) as a purveyor to the Mimasaka Katsuyama Domain and presented as a tribute. Currently, the brewery is run by the seventh-generation brewer, Soichiro Tsuji, and his sister, Maiko, who serve as master brewers. Located in Mimasaka (the former name of the northern part of Okayama Prefecture), which has long been known as the "Land of Delicious Sake," the brewery is blessed with ideal conditions for sake brewing, including a cold climate and high-quality sake rice and water, and brews sake using only local Omachi rice, grown in Okayama Prefecture. It is the only brewery in Japan that produces only Omachi sake. Another feature is the fact that it was the first in the country to revive the Bodaimoto method of sake brewing.
