"Kanbai" is a type of plum that blooms on the winter solstice, and is generally known as an early-blooming plum that blooms during the coldest of winters. When Niijima Jo (founder of Doshisha University), an educator from the Meiji period, saw the early-blooming Kanbai, enduring the wind and snow in the cold, he wrote a poem about how they are not competing for first place, but are natural and humble, and how people should be like them.
