Danzan, founded in Nara in 1877 (Meiji 10), began brewing sake near the first torii gate of Sakurai Danzan Shrine, famous for its autumn foliage. Located in front of the gates of Shorinji Temple, which houses the national treasure Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, this area has long been blessed with beautiful water, and even today, the groundwater that gushes forth from the well within the brewery purifies the taste of the sake. The Eleven-Faced Kannon statue came from Miwa, and it is said that the god of water and also the god of sake reside in the Kannon statue holding a water vase. We brew sake under the protection of these gods. We use a large amount of rice from Nara Prefecture. We use water from our own well for brewing. It is said that "where there is good water, there is good sake." Sakurai City in Nara Prefecture is known as the birthplace of many things, including sake, somen noodles, sumo wrestling, and Japanese performing arts.
