Tanzan was founded in Nara in 1877 (Meiji 10). The brewery began its sake brewing near the first torii gate of Tanzan Shrine in Sakurai, famous for its autumn foliage. Located in front of Shorinji Temple, home to the National Treasure Eleven-Faced Kannon, this area has long been blessed with clean water. Even today, the groundwater gushing forth from the well within the brewery purifies the taste of its sake. The Eleven-Faced Kannon originated from Miwa, and it's said that the Kannon holding the water jug embodies the god of water and the god of sake. We brew sake under the protection of this god. We use a large amount of rice grown in Nara Prefecture. We use water from our own well for brewing. It's said that "where there's good water, there's good sake." Sakurai City in Nara Prefecture is known as the birthplace of sake, somen noodles, sumo, and other Japanese performing arts.
