According to documents detailing the sake trade that remain in our family, our family business was founded in 1695 (Genroku 8). Futagi Sake Brewery is located in Kami-Ninomachi, an area known for its old townscape, and has been dedicated to sake brewing ever since, now in its 16th generation. The current building was rebuilt based on Edo-period blueprints after most of it was destroyed in a major fire at the beginning of the Meiji era. From the open earthen floor with its thick beams to the storehouse-style sake brewery, the structure and layout showcase the renowned Edo-period craftsmanship of "Hida artisans." The pure well water in the center of the house was used for brewing sake, and the sake was named "Tamanoi" after this.
