Obata Sake Brewery was founded in 1892 (Meiji 25) by Obata Yososaku in the former town of Mano on Sado Island, and has been brewing craft-style sake ever since. The motto of sake brewing is "Shihou Wajo (Four Treasures in Harmony)." This means brewing with the harmony of the four treasures, adding "Sado," the place where sake is produced, to the three main elements of sake brewing: rice, water, and people. Our company's family crest, the four-eyed crest, also symbolizes this. Sado Island, where the Manotsuru is cultivated, is rich in historical, natural, and cultural diversity and is said to be a "miniature of Japan." The island is home to endangered Japanese crested ibises, and the brewery is committed to environmentally friendly agriculture. The water is extremely clear and soft, and is produced by melting snow from the two mountain ranges that run north and south of the island, seeping deep into the ground and then naturally filtering out to spring up at the foot of the mountain. The water is perfect for brewing light and soft sake.
