Obata Sake Brewery was founded in 1892 (Meiji 25) by Obata Yososaku in the former town of Mano on Sado Island, where it has been brewing craft-style sake ever since. Its motto is "Shihou Wajo," or "the harmony of the four treasures." This motto, which combines the three essential elements of sake brewing—rice, water, and people—with the addition of "Sado," the place where sake is produced, signifies brewing sake with the harmony of these four treasures, a theme also embodied in our company's four-eyed family crest. Sado Island, home to the Manotsuru crest, is rich in historical, natural, and cultural diversity and is known as a "miniature version of Japan." The island is home to endangered Japanese crested ibises, and the brewery is committed to environmentally conscious agriculture. The brewery's water is exceptionally clear and soft, percolating from the melting snow of the two mountain ranges stretching north and south of the island, which seeps deep into the ground before naturally filtering and springing up at the base. Its quality is ideal for brewing light, smooth sake.
