Hanakami is a pink sake that was named after the novel "Hanakami" by the fourth-generation head brewer, Utsunomiya Shigeaki, who wrote a 12-page letter to author Shiba Ryotaro, pleading with him to name the flower-colored sake after the novel. Shiba kindly replied with a handwritten postcard, agreeing to the name. The novel "Hanakami" is about the Meiji Restoration patriot Omura Masujiro and Philipp Franz von Siebold's daughter, Kusumoto Ine, and since Ine trained as a doctor under Ninomiya Keisaku, a disciple of Siebold, in Unomachi, where the brewery is located, the location of the brewery is also related to the novel.
