It has a fruity taste as if it contains plum or acerola juice, a soft and light smoothness, and a low alcohol content, making it popular among those who do not usually drink sake and those who like fruit sake. The pink color of the sake is naturally produced by the action of red sake yeast (pink yeast), and no coloring agents are used.

花神酒是一款粉紅清酒，其名稱取自小說《花神》，由第四代釀酒師宇都宮重明命名。他曾寫給作家司馬遼太郎一封長達12頁的信，懇求他以小說《花神》命名這款花色清酒。司馬遼太郎親切地回信，附上一張手寫明信片，表示同意。小說《花神》講述了明治維新時期的愛國人士大村益次郎和菲利普·弗朗茨·馮·西博爾德之女楠本伊根的故事。由於伊根在釀酒廠所在的卯之町，即西博爾德的弟子二宮惠作門下學習醫術，因此釀酒廠的所在地也與小說有關。
